Mumbai weather, explained

How to read the Mumbai forecast

Mumbai weather is best understood in three layers. Current conditions tell you what it feels like right now before you step out. The hourly strip is what matters for planning: when the next rain band is due, when humidity eases, when the sea breeze comes in off the Arabian Sea. The seven-day is reliable for the first three days and useful for broad planning after that. Read it top to bottom and you will have what you need.

Mumbai and the monsoon

The southwest monsoon typically arrives in Mumbai around 10 June and withdraws in late September. In those four months the city receives the vast majority of its annual rainfall, often in intense bursts that overwhelm drainage and bring flash flooding to low-lying suburbs. The Arabian Sea drives Mumbai's weather year-round: the sea breeze that arrives most afternoons moderates afternoon heat, while humid onshore flow keeps the city warmer in winter than its latitude would suggest.

What the UV index means in Mumbai

Mumbai sits at 19 degrees north, putting it in one of the world's highest UV bands. Even in the 'cool' season, UV regularly reaches 7 or above on clear days, meaning unprotected skin burns quickly. During the pre-monsoon months of April and May, clear-sky UV can exceed 11. The index peaks before solar noon, not at the hottest part of the afternoon, so checking the number rather than guessing from temperature is the most reliable guide. SPF 30 or above is recommended whenever the index is above 3.
